SURELY: Dion Dublin makes punchy Coventry City promotion claim

Dion Dublin, a former star of the Sky Blues, thinks the team can advance automatically the following year.

It appears that Coventry City will have to go the extra mile to secure promotion to the Premier League with only a few Championship games left.

Despite having a game in hand over sixth-place Norwich City, Mark Robins’ team is currently eight points behind the Sky Blues and two spots out of the play-offs.

Championship table, as it stands 17/04/2024
Position Club P GD Pts
5 West Brom 43 24 72
6 Norwich City 43 16 71
7 Hull City 42 8 65
8 Coventry City 42 14 63
9 Middlesbrough 43 5 63

This indicates that the Sky Blues’ chances of winning promotion this season are slim, albeit not zero.

Many people anticipated that they would be in the running for promotion this season after they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season when they lost to Luton Town on penalties in the play-off final. However, some patchy play has prevented them from maintaining a play-off push.

But the Sky Blues have performed admirably in the cup, and they will play Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday in the FA Cup semifinal with the hope of winning the trophy for the first time since 1987.

Dion Dublin: Coventry City can win automatic promotion next season

Although Coventry won’t be promoted this season, former Sky Blues striker Dion Dublin thinks they have a chance to be among the top two teams the following year.

Dublin, who spent four years at Highfield Road and scored 69 goals in 155 appearances for the Sky Blues, was a player for several clubs, including Coventry’s FA Cup opponents Manchester United.

The 54-year-old stated: “Coventry City can definitely secure automatic promotion next season and I think that’s what Mark Robins will be looking for, but I don’t think he will change the way he plays in order to get there.”

After being relegated to League Two in 2017, the Sky Blues have experienced a renaissance in recent years.

Dublin thinks they are headed back to the Premier League, even though it was very different from the early years when Coventry was a Premier League team for nine straight seasons following the league’s formation in 1992.

It’s been a slow process of getting closer and closer, he stated. They are a Premier League football team in my opinion.”

There’s no reason Coventry shouldn’t aim for the top two.

The likelihood of promotion for three of the teams—Leicester, Leeds, Ipswich, and Southampton—this season eliminates some very positive aspects of the competition and makes the league appear more open and unpredictable.

Three Premier League teams will undoubtedly drop out of the league the following season, but it’s difficult to imagine them playing as well as Leeds, Leicester, and Southampton have this year.
