Sunderland is still a formidable foe, according to Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl, despite the Black Cats’ dismal season finale.

On the last day of the Championship season, Wednesday will head to the Stadium of Light with the knowledge that a point will guarantee their spot in the division the next year. With Rohl’s team having gone five games without a loss, the Owls have been playing very well to get out of the relegation zone. In contrast, Sunderland has only triumphed in two of its previous twelve league games under interim manager Mike Dodds.

Due to Rohl’s impressive performance since taking over at Hillsborough, a number of clubs are reportedly interested in signing the German. With two years remaining on his contract as of Wednesday, it has been reported that the 35-year-old is on Sunderland’s shortlist as the Black Cats search for a permanent head coach this summer.

In response to a question regarding their next match against Sunderland, Rohl stated, “I believe they want to try and say goodbye to the fans and take some points now.” They have undoubtedly seen ups and downs, but if you look at the results, they haven’t given up many goals in the last five games. They are continuing trying even if they didn’t score many goals.

“It’s a young team with a lot of players that have a lot of potential. Naturally, they can play a little bit freely if they approach us in a flow and we’re not prepared for it, which is always dangerous. For us, we have a fantastic opportunity if we demonstrate to them our strength and mentality.

“You cannot enter a Championship game believing that the players are not competing for anything. Of course, on their final matchday, they are also trying to win.

Ian Poveda, a Leeds loanee, has missed the previous four Wednesday games due to a hamstring strain, but he is back at training. The day before his team’s match against Sunderland, Rohl said a decision regarding the forward’s availability will be made. However, he also stated he won’t be taking any needless risks.
