Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Di’Shon Bernard is of strong interest to a number of teams, as per a report from The Star.
Sheffield Wednesday face a big summer after securing their place in the Championship for another year.
Securing the future of manager Danny Rohl is of the utmost importance but after initial positive talks, the German has headed off on holiday and discussions will resume once he’s got some well earned rest.
Question marks surround the fate of several key players at Hillsborough too.
Among them is centre-back Bernard, who became an important player for the Owls after penning a year-long deal upon his arrival last summer. Now, it is said that his situation is drawing attention from elsewhere.
The Star states that a handful of Championship teams and sides in Europe are showing a strong interest in the 23-year-old as his deal winds down. Talks over a new contract have taken place are are likely to continue, but if no agreement is reached, Bernard will be free to move on for nothing.
It is added that one of the second-tier rivals keen on Bernard is likely to be in the promotion fight next season, though they are not named.
No lack of interest
It’s no surprise that Bernard has fans elsewhere amid questions over his future at Sheffield Wednesday. He’s been an impressive player for the Owls despite their challenging season and few would be surprised if he just keeps getting better.
The former Manchester United man performed well on loan at Portsmouth over the second half of the 2022/23 campaign and he’s made the step back up to the Championship well.
As he continues to progress, many will think he can maximise the potential he displayed while at Old Trafford, so clubs will be keen on a shrewd deal this summer.
Keeping him would be a big boost for Wednesday but with other fans, they could face a fight for Bernard.
Reason to be optimistic?
The Owls finished a tough season on a high and there’s big hopes for their future under Rohl. He’s proven himself as a top boss and if he can stay, Wednesday will have their sights set on a bigger and better 2024/25 season.
Keeping him and key players like Bernard will be important though, otherwise they’ll be back in the position they found themselves in last summer after Darren Moore’s departure.
For that reason, people may be a little apprehensive when it comes to next season for now. Securing key figures’ futures will change that though, so a big few weeks lie ahead of Sheffield Wednesday.
