After finishing 10th in the second tier in the 2019/20 season, Derby County was eager to bolster their squad, having slipped from their previous standings in the league.

The club made significant signings such as Kamil Jozwiak, Jordan Ibe, Nathan Byrne, and Colin Kazim-Richards. However, they also allowed several players to depart Pride Park, many of whom have since excelled with their new teams.

Before the season commenced, notable players like Chris Martin, Jack Marriott, Scott Malone, and Mason Bennett left the East Midlands club. Additionally, Morgan Whittaker joined Swansea City during the January transfer window.

Arguably, Derby’s most significant losses were Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe, whose contributions had been valuable since their arrival at Pride Park.

The duo amassed almost 150 appearances for the club and were a key cog in the way in which the Derby side operated, and losing them was considered a huge loss. However, it was suggested that both players had brought in £12 million for the club to reinvest in the squad, but that proved to be wide of the mark.

Both Bogle and Lowe have carved out impressive careers at Sheffield United, featuring prominently in the Premier League during their four-year tenure with the club in Sheffield.

As the season draws to a close, uncertainties loom over Bogle’s future at Bramall Lane. Reports from the Sheffield Star suggest that the recently relegated Premier League side holds an option to extend Bogle’s contract by another year.

In response to this development, Wilder expressed confidence that the 23-year-old would commit to new terms with the club, emphasizing that signing Bogle was among the best transfers the club has ever made.

Wilder affirmed his vision of Bogle as part of Sheffield United’s future, highlighting the player’s outstanding contributions since his arrival. He praised the astuteness of the deal, securing both Bogle and Max Lowe for under £4 million combined, considering Bogle’s impressive record as the highest-scoring defender in the Premier League for the club.

The narrative underscores the financial struggles that led to such talented players leaving the club for nominal fees, a trend that has unfortunately repeated itself. Players like Malcolm Ebiowei, Luke Plange, and Kaide Gordon showed immense potential in the academy but were sold to alleviate Derby’s off-field challenges.

Under David Clowes, however, such occurrences are unlikely to recur. The club’s improved financial standing allows for fair negotiations and appropriate valuations of players, as seen in Max Bird’s transfer to Bristol City. This strategy aims to prevent similar financial vulnerabilities in the future, reflecting the club’s newfound stability and foresight.
