Willock let go: What to expect from QPR’s retained list this summer

QPR pulled off an incredible comeback to keep their Championship status, and they’ll now turn their attention to a crucial summer window.

QPR looked doomed before the appointment of Marti Cifuentes, but the Spaniard rejuvenated the Rs and eventually led them to survival.

The West London team finished the season with three consecutive wins, placing them 18th in the Championship table and six points above the relegation zone.

With Cifuentes at the helm, there’s reason to be optimistic about next season. However, a busy summer lies ahead, with inevitable incomings and outgoings.

QPR’s retained list will be announced soon after the season ends. Here’s what to expect.

Chris Willock exits.

Willock has been a popular figure at QPR, and we’ve seen glimpses of his old form under Cifuentes.

With his contract expiring and interest from clubs like Sunderland and Norwich City, the ex-Arsenal prospect could leave this summer. He’ll go with the well wishes of Rs fans if he does, and if he stays, it’ll be greatly appreciated.

However, a move could benefit both him and the club. It would clear the way for new signings while also allowing him to take on a new challenge after nearly four years at Loftus Road.

Potential extensions

QPR must do everything in their power to keep certain players.

Jimmy Dunne, a defender, and Sinclair Armstrong, a talented striker, are two players who can be valuable assets both now and in the future, and they deserve new contracts. If extensions are not confirmed, you can expect talks to take place.

Joe Walsh, the young goalkeeper, may also be able to stay. He put in a strong performance when given a starting spot on the final day and could be an asset going forward.
Players to be released.
There are several likely candidates for departure.

Aaron Drewe, Elijah Dixon-Bonner, Osman Kakay, and Jordan Archer were all on the fringes and will benefit from moves elsewhere. It would be surprising if any of those four figures into Cifuentes’ QPR plans.

Captain Asmir Begovic may also move on. Despite his impressive clean sheet record, the veteran shot-stopper has had a difficult season, and Cifuentes may be looking for a new number one.

Albert Adomah’s departure has already been confirmed, but he remains determined to continue playing.

Loanees Charlie Kelman, Andre Dozzell, and Stephen Duke-McKenna are also out of contract. Many will expect all three to be released, allowing them to sign with new clubs as free agents.
