Birmingham City, Oxford United and Bolton Wanderers eye soon-to-be free agent swoop

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers has emerged on the radars of Bolton Wanderers, Barnsley, Oxford United, Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City, according to a story by The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday have a choice to make regarding the future of the midfielder this season. The Owls will be playing Championship football again next year following their amazing survival under German boss Danny Rohl.

Byers, 27, was shipped out on loan to Blackpool in the January transfer window to get some game time under his belt in League One. The Tangerines have also been mentioned on the long list of Football League clubs allegedly keen on landing him ahead of the next campaign.

His contract at Hillsborough expires at the end of next month and he is set to become a free agent as things stand. The Star‘s report says he won’t be short of options and has a whole host of teams ready to snap him up if he was to become available.

Sheffield Wednesday man eyed by number of teams

Sheffield Wednesday signed Byers back in 2021 and he has since made 78 appearances for the Yorkshire side in all competitions, chipping in with 14 goals.

He then played 16 matches for Blackpool during the second-half of last term as they nearly missed out on the third tier play-offs under Neil Critchley.

The former Scotland youth international rose up through the academy ranks at Watford and was a regular for the Hornets at different youth levels before going on to play once for their first-team as a youngster.

Swansea City snapped him up in 2016 and he spent five years in South Wales, playing 65 matches and finding the net on eight occasions, as well as having a loan spell away at Portsmouth.

He helped Sheffield Wednesday win promotion to the second tier under their former boss Darren Moore back in 2022 but his future is up in the air now.

Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers and Oxford United keen

Birmingham City have a big summer ahead following their relegation and Byers would be a great addition for the Blues. He has a lot of knowledge of playing at that level and would add more competition and depth to their midfield department.

Bolton Wanderers and Oxford United are locking horns in the League One play-off final at Wembley after seeing off Barnsley and Peterborough United in their individual semi-final clashes.

Byers could be seen by the pair as a possible target if they were to get promoted and getting him on a free transfer would be a no brainer.
