Birmingham City, Derby County and Everton Character Caught Between £6.7bn ‘tug of war’.

Wayne Rooney reveals ambition to become Manchester United manager | The Independent

According to a report from The Sun, former Birmingham City manager Wayne Rooney is currently a sought-after figure for a new role. He finds himself in the middle of a ‘tug of war’ between Sky Sports and TNT. Both broadcasters, who have invested £6.7 billion to stream games from 2025 to 2029, are vying for his services as a ‘top pundit’ for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

Sky Sports already boasts a star-studded lineup including Gary Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Jamie Carragher, Paul Merson, and Roy Keane. On the other hand, TNT features pundits such as Joe Cole, Peter Crouch, and Rio Ferdinand. Rooney’s expertise is highly regarded by TV producers, with positive feedback from viewers.

Despite the interest, Rooney seems undecided about committing to a punditry role for a full season. He reportedly harbors aspirations of returning to coaching despite his challenging tenure with Birmingham City.

Rooney’s managerial stint with the Blues lasted for 15 matches, taking over from John Eustace with the team positioned in the play-offs. However, their fortunes declined under Rooney’s leadership, with the team slipping to 20th place and hovering just six points above the relegation zone. He managed only two victories during his tenure, accumulating a mere 10 points from a possible 45.

Following his departure from Birmingham City, Rooney has made appearances on Gary Neville’s podcast, “The Overlap,” and has undertaken punditry duties for the BBC’s FA Cup coverage. He also contributed to TNT Sport in March during the clash between two of his former clubs, Manchester United and Everton. If he doesn’t secure a managerial role, it’s probable that he will join the BBC for their coverage of EURO 2024.
