Sheffield Wednesday facing European competition in chase for Arsenal striker

Sheffield Wednesday target Mika Biereth’s loan club Sturm Graz are set to hold talks over a permanent deal for the striker, as per the Evening Standard.

Sheffield Wednesday will swiftly turn their attentions to transfer plans for this summer after securing the future of manager Danny Rohl.

After staving off relegation under his lead, the Owls will be hopeful of pushing further up the Championship table when the new season comes around. However, they’ll need the help of fresh faces.

One player who has already been linked with Wednesday is striker Mika Biereth. He was a winter target amid an impressive stint at Motherwell and having impressed in Austria with Sturm Graz, he’s back on the radar at Hillsborough.

Now though, fresh reports state there could be a fight for his services.

The Evening Standard have revealed Arsenal and Sturm Graz are set to hold talks over a potential permanent deal. Discussions will take place this week as they look to keep their influential loan star.

Biereth managed nine goals and four assists in 22 games for the Austrian side. His efforts there took his tally for the season to 15 goals and nine assists in 37 games.

A battle for Biereth?

Given just how well Biereth has performed this season, Sheffield Wednesday likely would have been anticipating competition in the race for his signature this summer.

Sturm Graz could be well positioned to strike a deal for him, so it will be food for thought.

Biereth has thoroughly impressed in his stint with the Austrian side and having played regularly to great success, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he was keen on a stay. After all, they can offer him European football too.

He has a year left on his deal so Arsenal may take the chance to cash in. That could spell bad news for the Owls but ultimately time will tell how talks over his future and discussions with Sturm Graz pan out.

The Rohl factor

With Rohl remaining at Sheffield Wednesday, the club should be hopeful of some impressive deals.

Clubs will be eager for their top talents to learn from the highly regarded coach and in battles for sought-after prospects like Biereth, that could certainly be a deciding factor.

Whether it’s enough to get the Danish striker to Hillsborough, it remains to be seen though.

Sturm Graz should be well positioned to bring him in permanently and with talks set to take place, they look to be making an early move to get him back through the door.
