Kenny Miller has been left wowed by the January signing of Fabio Silva at Rangers this month, suggesting the forward can be a Jota-esque addition for the Gers.
The Portuguese forward was signed on a loan deal from Wolves until the end of the season as Philippe Clement’s first addition at Ibrox and made his first appearance from the bench in the Light Blues’ 3-1 win over Kilmarnock.
While it remains to be seen whether or not the 21-year-old will build on that positive start in a Rangers shirt, BBC Sportsound pundit Miller admits that he could see him transforming the Gers as Jota did during his time at Celtic.
Writing in the Daily Record (7 January) he said: “He has already brought in Fabio Silva on loan from Wolves. A lot is expected of him but he’s still only 20 years old.
“You’d love to think he could have the same kind of impact Jota had at Celtic when he initially joined from Benfica but time will tell.”
Rangers are going to need some big difference-makers in their side for the second half of the Scottish Premiership season if they want to win the title ahead of Celtic and Silva could be the first one of those added to Clement’s side.
The Portuguese forward has been highly rated throughout his career and while he has never quite been able to match that level of expectation, the hope at Ibrox will be that he is able to finally hit those heights in a blue shirt.
Jota transformed Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic team during his time in Glasgow. While the similarities with Silva don’t go much further than their nationality, the 21-year-old could really help the Gers in their title challenge over the next few months.
Hopefully, he’ll hit the ground running after the winter break and begin to find the net regularly over the second half of the campaign. All Rangers supporters will be crossing their fingers that they’ve signed the next Jota rather than another Cyriel Dessers.
