Owen Beck being recalled by Liverpool could have been seen as a positive for Rangers if not for the injury setbacks sustained by Andy Robertson and Konstantinos Tsimikas.
The 21-year-old Welshman had been impressing on loan at fellow Scottish side Dundee FC, cementing his position in Tony Docherty’s starting XI with two goals and two assists in 17 appearances.
And with Philippe Clement’s desire for a new left-back, it was reported, as per Daily Mail, that Rangers had already seen an approach for the Liverpool youngster rebuffed. Now, with Jurgen Klopp’s recent comments, it appears the Premier League club have doubled down on their stance.
It was good. We always saw and were pretty positive about Owen but then he had two really difficult loan spells, which was a surprise that it didn’t work out because of what we thought about Owen, but that’s how it is,” the Liverpool manager said.
“In Dundee it was fine and he made big steps, and now the situation here is clear: we lose two of our left-backs so we think it makes sense if a boy we like is available for us, we bring him back.”
Beck has come on leaps and bounds since the former player that was sent out on loan to Famalicao and Bolton Wanderers. He has transformed into this highly-rated attacking full-back that even Trent Alexander-Arnold would be proud of.
His performances earned the youngster a call-up to Rob Page’s senior Wales team, claiming a spot on the bench as they beat Gibraltar in a 4-0 friendly victory at Wrexham’s SToK Cae Ras.
It will be a tough pill for Clement to swallow, missing out on a promising left-back while he seems to have lost faith in Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic. The Belgian has voiced his need to add depth in a lot of areas of his squad, looking to his defence after loaning Fabio Silva from Wolves.
There is no guarantee that the Gers won’t go back to Liverpool with a second bid. But with Liverpool’s defensive situation currently, Beck has a real chance of making a third-ever appearance for his boyhood club.
