Rangers want “major coup” signed this week as Premier League club step up interest – report

Rangers hope to complete a deal in time for Michy Batshuayi to join up with his teammates at the club’s winter training camp in Spain this week.

The claims come as Rangers are said to be leading the hunt for the former Chelsea striker, who has failed to agree a new contract at Fenerbahce.

With the 30-year-old hitman’s current deal expiring in the summer, the Scottish Sun have named the Ibrox side as frontrunners to secure a “major transfer coup” in Michy Batshuayi.

Premier League Everton are also mentioned as potential loan suitors but the report claims Rangers boss Philippe Clement wants the striker in for this this week’s training camp.

Michy Batshuayi set to leave Fenerbahce

Rangers are all set to jet out to La Manga later today as the club ramps up its mid-season preparations during the Scottish football winter break.

There will be a few eyes on who boards the plane and who doesn’t with transfer season well underway.

Amid claims crunch talks are scheduled within the next 24 hours, Rangers fans are naturally getting a little excited by the notion Michy Batshuayi could join the club.

The Gers are undoubtedly in the hunt for a new striker this winter with the club’s shot-shy options lagging far behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in the title hunt.

Signing a quality forward option could be the difference between lifting title number 56 or not and Michy Batshuayi is certainly just that.

With the striker now set to leave Fenerbahce, perhaps a switch to Ibrox under a Belgian manager at an exciting moment for the club is an attractive proposition.

Rangers striker hunt takes Belgian twist

Chelsea once paid a reported £33m to sign Batshuayi in 2016 from Marseille, where he failed to really get enough first-team exposure.

Having started his career with Standard Liege, the striker had loan spells with Borussia Dortmund, Valencia, Crystal Palace, and Besiktas before moving to Fenerbahce in 2022.

Since then, Michy Batshuayi has made 53 appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals, and now Rangers appear to be interested in signing the hitman.

Having scored goals wherever he has played, the signing of the Belgian would be a major statement of intent for Rangers as they look to improve their squad this summer.

The club have already signed Wolves hitman Fabio Silva on loan, whilst the likes of Ridvan Yilmaz and Sam Lammers are expected to free up wages and transfer funds with imminent exits.
