How Rangers could already have own version of £40m Newcastle cult hero Joelinton

Rangers defeated Kilmarnock at Ibrox, giving supporters at Ibrox another opportunity to see the enigmatic Cyriel Dessers.

Since his rumored £4.5 million summer transfer from Cremonese, the striker has been under constant pressure, and he has generally fallen short of expectations.

The Rangers’ redesigned frontline has really had trouble carrying the team’s weight as a whole, and the team’s forward difficulties have occasionally been dire due to a lack of consistency and injury concerns.

Rangers have been forced to endure a difficult festive run-in with Cyriel Dessers due to injuries to Danilo and Kemar Roofe.

Even though the striker had won over some supporters in recent weeks, such sentiments were slightly dashed at Celtic Park when he mispronounced a line after breaking through on goal.

Dessers’ early promise allowed him to break through the Celtic defence, but he was unable to seize the opportunity, providing a graphic depiction of his time in Glasgow.

Although Philippe Clement stood up for the striker, Cyriel Dessers found it difficult to accept the situation.

For Rangers supporters accustomed to their team’s incapacity to prevail against Celtic, the match felt like to déjà vu.

To be fair, the striker, who was obviously lacking confidence, got over his disappointment and played again in the victory over Kilmarnock.

Although the striker did not meet his goal before the Scottish Premiership’s winter break, he did provide another outstanding assist, which could indicate that his position within the squad is shifting.

Cyriel Dessers provided Ross McCausland with a spectacular assist, his third in the league this season, to score a crucial first goal despite not finding the back of the net against Kilmarnock.

Rangers’ forward can draw inspiration from Joelinton

When Newcastle United spent a then-club-record £40 million to recruit Brazilian “striker” Joelinton from Hoffenheim, supporters of the team experienced a similar problem.

The brutal hitman, who was very much in the style of Dessers, was meant to be the center of attention for the Toon Army, but pressure mounted when the goals never materialized.

However, after a few seasons, the striker is suddenly seen as a box-to-box midfielder due to his unwavering work ethic, physicality, deft forward play, and (occasional) eye for goal, which seem to be ideal for the center of St. James’ Park.

On Tyneside, the passionate Brazilian is frequently referred to as a “cult hero.” Eddie Howe stated in April that the man was “worth his weight in gold.” It’s been an astonishing change.

We’re not claiming that Cyriel Dessers possesses all the necessary skills or physical characteristics to succeed Joelinton at the Rangers.

However, the Brazilian striker’s experience with the Magpies offers the striker a lot of motivation, and the McCausland assist gives him a better understanding of Dessers’ perception of the attacking side of the game.

At Ibrox, the striker similarly put a ball through for Rabbi Matondo to score versus PSV Eindhoven.

Although it demonstrates that the forward is far more than just a goal scorer, Rangers supporters will find it difficult to accept Dessers as long as he consistently fails to provide the big moments in blue.

Nonetheless, Joelinton’s tale suggests that, should the hitman figure out how to make a difference in Glasgow, there may be hope for atonement.
