‘Not so good’: Striker now training with reserves after admitting Rangers want to sign him

Following his admission that Scottish Premiership powerhouse Rangers are interested in signing him, Kevin van Veen, a former Motherwell talisman, is currently practicing with Groningen’s reserves.

One imagines that the uncertainty surrounding Kevin van Veen’s future at Groningen would not go unnoticed at Ibrox, especially with Rangers continuing their chase of another center-forward.

The well-travelled striker, who scored 29 goals during a productive stint at Motherwell last season, told The Herald earlier this month that he is still being courted by a Rangers team that expressed interest in bringing him to Ibrox a few months prior.

After traveling to Scotland to give birth to his child, Van Veen—who had already lost favor at Groningen—is training apart from the rest of the senior squad with a January exit quite likely.

When asked about Van Veen’s fitness, Groningen head coach Dirk Lukkien responds, “Not so good,” to Voetbal Primeur.

We gave him a test two weeks ago when he returned from Scotland, and it seems like he has lagged significantly. It follows that he must receive training.

“We offered him the option to reestablish the rhythm. either by working with the Under21s in group training or by doing solo training. He went with option number two.

We are aware that (Van Veen) traveled to Scotland this past weekend with permission, as usual. When he returned (on Monday), he discovered that he was unable to take part in the group training.

“We’re going to do every effort to make sure that everything proceeds well. Better tests are required. He completely supports the agreements we have reached in this regard.

29 goals in the previous campaign

Van Veen, who joined Groningen for about £500,000 over the summer and was nominated for the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year award the previous season, should turn out to be far more economical than some of Rangers’ other striker targets. Bojan Miovski, for example, is valued by Aberdeen at more than £5 million.
