Neil McCann of Rangers responds to the Ibrox drama versus Motherwell on BBC

Rangers: Neil McCann responds on the BBC to the Ibrox controversy vs Motherwell

Despite a protracted VAR call, Motherwell’s defender Stephen O’Donnell was criticised by Neil McCann for giving up a penalty against Rangers in their 2-1 victory at Ibrox.

Going to ground in the box is a cardinal infraction, according to McCann, who also maintained that by doing so, he allowed Fabio Silva the chance to draw the foul after being knocked around.

Referee Alan Muir has been compared by David Edgar to Stevie Wonder as a result of the conviction that he should have had the authority to make the call himself.

Speaking in real time on BBC Sportscene on March 2 at 19:46, McCann emphasised that it is unacceptable for a defender to go to ground in the box, especially if he doesn’t appear to be close to the ball.

“Fabio Silva slides in, gives him a little, cute dink over the top, and gets cleaned out.”

Rangers received a penalty in spite of the SFA plot.

After yet another unsatisfactory performance from a referee—something that has begun to feel like a recurring theme this season—Muir is the most recent official to make an appearance on the hit list of Rangers supporters.

It is an obvious penalty, as McCann made apparent. When O’Donnell falls to the ground and collides with Silva, the striker is able to go down and alert VAR to the call. that defies logic how the referee missed that.

The debate surrounding these calls and decisions, or rather the lack thereof, has undoubtedly been brought up much too frequently this season, after Rangers’ earlier incident involving Willie Collum’s incorrect penalty call at Parkhead.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has not been afraid to mix up his Rangers line-ups.

But right now, the Rangers’ performance needs to be the main focus. They can’t afford to shift the blame or put the blame elsewhere. Clement and his group need to be conscious of their mistakes and act fast to address them.
