‘I would love it’ – Ferguson wants Rangers to sign Englishman who may be new Ibrox goal machine

We’re delighted to welcome former Ibrox star Derek Ferguson as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points in Govan…

Derek Ferguson would “absolutely love it” if Joe Gelhardt were the man to score regular goals for Rangers and urged the scouting team to keep finding “wee diamonds” on the market.

It was reported by Simon Jones in the Daily Mail back on 8 January that out-of-favour Leeds forward Gelhardt, 21, was a player Rangers are interested in during the January window.

Such a move looks to be complicated by the fact that it would count as an international loan deal and Leeds are unable to sanction any more such deals (Yorkshire Evening Post, 19 January).

Former Rangers man Ferguson concedes he is not too aware of Gelhardt as a player but would have no qualms about him moving to Ibrox if he were the man to find form in front of goal.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “I don’t know too much about him, most weekends I’m out covering Scottish football so my concentration’s in that.

“That’s why we’ve all these guys, there’s scouts that are there up and down the country, watching different leagues, different players, so if his name is cropping up we need a goalscorer.

“You talk about leading the line, I think we just need someone who can put the ball in the back of the net.
