Gers time running out for striker after £2.8m rejected summer bid, Koppen should hijack deal

In the summer, Rangers were linked with strikers both old and new with several up and coming prospects like BK Hacken’s Benie Traore mentioned on the back pages.

A £4m move to Sheffield United ended any possibility of a transfer to Ibrox as the young flying machine looked to make the step up to the Premier League, a £2.8m offer from Michael Beale not enough for the Swedes.

It looks like a step that has been too big to take and Rangers, with hindsight, would have been a better option for Benie Traore who now, according to various sources, is set to leave the Blades on loan.

Rangers could have second striker option in Benie Traore

I was never that good at maths but, Gers boss Philippe Clement’s squad could do with more firepower and a versatile forward that can play through the middle or out wide.

We could also do with another striker who has pace.

Traore was on fire in Sweden’s Allsvenskan before heading to England and Rangers had been heavily tipped to compete for his signature.

Michael Beale promised something different and the young Ivorian looked exactly that in his breakthrough season, however, for similar money, Sam Lammers and Cyril Dessers were signed.

Not quite the something different that Rangers fans had in mind.

Unfortunately, if the Rangers recruitment team have been sending videos to Philippe Clement, the Gers boss will have to give the green light quickly with news breaking that the 21-year old could be on his way to Ligue 1 and Nantes.

Benie Traore is exactly the type of player that Rangers should have signed in the summer but didn’t.

Young, fast, on form and with the potential to make an immediate impact as well as a profit in the future.

We may have missed out, and we may well miss out again, but Nils Koppen will have been aware of Traore from his time at PSV Eindhoven and he should still be a player that we keep tabs on.

Given the type of player that he is, it always seemed a strange move going to a team who were likely to be involved in a relegation battle and aren’t exactly known for fast, free flowing football.

Rangers should watch Benie Traore from a distance if his deal at Nantes is confirmed because, if Sheffield United get relegated, they will probably want to move a few players on.
