Despite acknowledging that he wasn’t considered a “big talent” when he first became successful, striker Cyriel Dessers is now focused on creating something “beautiful” with Rangers.

The frontman received criticism from the Ibrox supporters during Michael Beale’s tenure after moving for £4.5 million from Serie A team Cremonese in the summer. However, after Philippe Clement helped him launch his Scottish Premiership career, the Belgian has quieted some of his detractors. With six goals since the conclusion of the winter break, the Nigerian international who was born in Belgium has emerged as a vital member of Rangers, propelling the Light Blues to the summit of the standings.

Speaking to UEFA about his career, the 29-year-old also acknowledged that he is accustomed to disproving his detractors. The attacker has played much of his career in Belgium and the Dutch lower leagues before being signed by Feyenoord in 2021.

Dessers said in an open interview that “I was never considered a big, big talent. This route has strengthened me and shaped who I am now.”

Subsequently, he acknowledged his need to join the Rangers. “I was incredibly happy to sign here,” stated Dessers. with the desire to construct something exquisite.

“This season, we had a tremendously tough start, but as you can see, we’ve improved in the last several months. Then, you can observe that Rangers is a huge team when it is operating at full capacity. It’s astounding.

He was a major factor in Rangers winning their Europa League group, and he hopes to continue that success when they meet Benfica on Thursday night. While playing for Feyenoord, Dessers demonstrated his European heritage by scoring twice against Marseille to advance the Dutch team to the Conference League final.

“In retrospect, those were the goals that got us to the final so this was probably the most beautiful game of my career until now,” he says of his career highlight, the double during the first leg of the semi-final.
