After scoring his 131st goal of the season against Hibs on Saturday, James Tavernier said it was “crazy” to become the defender with the most goals in British football history.
The 32-year-old right-back gave Rangers the lead early in their 3-1 victory over the Hibees at Ibrox. With the goal, he moved one place clear of fellow full-back and former Scotland international Graham Alexander. His manager, Philippe Clement, was quick to praise his captain’s accomplishment.
After breaking the previous record, Tavernier told the media, “It’s crazy.” I would not have believed you if you had told me when I started playing professional football that I would have the opportunity to become the highest-scoring British defender in history. That is due to all of my playing companions over the years who have supported me along the way. I’ll just keep putting in a lot of effort and see how many I can get until I hang up my boots.
