There was to be no fumbling about when the chance arose to bring in a player who had fallen out of favor at Rangers during the January transfer window.
After the Golden Boot winner of the previous season left over the summer, Frans van Seumeren sought a forward to take his place.a Golden Boot winner who, before to moving to Spain, had been linked to a transfer to Glasgow’s blue side.
And FC Utrecht was in no mood to allow such an opportunity pass them by as it became clear that Rangers were open to bids for a guy who had cost the Glasgow giants back a cool £3 million a few months earlier – a figure he would struggle to justify.
A Rangers player is enjoying his loan
Consider Sam Lammers. Van Seumeren said on the De Beslissers podcast, “And I more or less pushed through to get Lammers.” He directly participated in the agreement that ultimately resulted in the former PSV Eindhoven attacker being sent back to the Netherlands on a short-term loan.
“Jordy (Zuidam, technical director) and Ron (Jans, head coach) contacted him at one point after doing a pretty outstanding job. Ultimately, it was evident that Lammers wanted to attend.
Lambers has scored more goals for Utrecht in only 10 games than he has in any of his other seasons since his excellent run at Heerenveen in 2018–19, which is remarkable. Lammers, a man reborn, has already scored six goals and provided six assists for his new employers. He plays with the same bravado that brought him his £8 million transfer to Atalanta all those years ago. Nearly twice as much as he amassed at Rangers during a very poor first half of the season.
Lammers is showing himself to be a “fantastic” addition to a team that hopes to compete in Europe. Although some have speculated that a rapid return to form may open the door for a new beginning at Rangers the following season, rumors suggest that Philippe Clement’s team is still intending to make cuts.
Sam Lammers is likely to be leaving Ibrox this summer.
It remains to be seen whether Utrecht can afford the kind of sum Rangers are asking for. It’s tempting to question whether Van Seumeren will be tempted to do something similar in the summer, but he was ready to move the goalposts a bit in order to guarantee Lammers’ initial renting base.
The budget did not include the rent (loan fee) that needed to be paid. Thus, you need to work things out,” the venerable president continues. I applied a little pressure on it at that precise time. (It made sense) as I could see that we lacked a striker.
“You want to avoid being demoted. You would not want to put yourself through such suffering, since it would result in my hanging from the (Utrecht) church! Then I said, “Let’s grab Lammers.”
Van Seumeren cast the dice on Lammers, and it seems his number has come up. He is now seventh and closer to the Champions League berths than the relegation spots.
