Rangers given yet another questionable penalty

Another dubious penalty was given to Rangers after Fabio Silva went down in the penalty area.

Referee John Beaton booked Silva for diving, but video assistant referees stepped in and gave Rangers a penalty even though Alistair Johnston barely touched the ball.

It was obvious that Silva was already down, having sought to buy fouls throughout the game, so what John Beaton observed from VAR is utterly perplexing.

Once again, the use of video assistant referees raises eyebrows; Johnston clearly could have gotten his leg away from Silva faster.

Even commentator Chris Sutton didn’t think Rangers deserved a penalty.

The Irishman may be careful with his views after missing last weekend’s Livingston game owing to a one-match suspension for his comments on John Beaton’s VAR intervention against Hearts at Tynecastle. We shall know Brendan Rodgers’s thoughts on the decision after the game.
