A summary of the most recent stories and transfer rumors as the League One season’s last games draw near.
Now that 2023–24 is almost over, Portsmouth can finally take a break and enjoy all of their hard work. After spending more than ten years away from the second division, John Mousinho’s team will make a comeback to the Championship later this year.
Pompey will find out who else will be making the promotion leap with them and Derby County before the summer break arrives. Take a look at some of the most recent League One headlines and transfer rumors while we wait for the play-off results.
Pompey joins the competition for a six-goal defender
Portsmouth can now focus on flexing their muscles in the transfer window as they get ready to return to the Championship, having secured both promotion and the League One title. Pompey had a strong season, save for a brief slump in performance, and their elevated status will undoubtedly draw some major players to the market.
Portsmouth is reportedly one of three EFL teams trying to sign Celtic’s Bosun Lawal this summer. The adaptable defender has also “had their heads turned” by Derby and Queens Park Rangers.
Lawal, 20, has played in every League One game since joining Fleetwood Town on loan last summer and has had a great season. Lawal, a center-back by trade, has demonstrated his versatility by playing at left back, right back, and in defensive and central midfield positions.
Lawal has performed admirably this season, even though Fleetwood was relegated, with six goals and two assists.
Posh star issues a playoff caution
Next weekend, Peterborough United will take on Oxford United in their first play-off semifinal leg as they compete for the final promotion spot. The U’s, who defeated the Posh handily 5-0 earlier this month, will surely be hoping for a repeat performance when they play again at Kassam Stadium.
Posh star Malik Mothersille, though, is feeling confident going into the playoffs and has sent a warning message to their opponents.
“We have faith in ourselves. Though some of our results may not have supported it, we are confident in our abilities and are eager to prove we are the best team. The 20-year-old striker said, “This is what we play for, games like this,” as he considered their most recent 3-3 draw with Bolton.
