Former Pompey midfielder Jay Mingi has completed a move to Stockport County on a three-year deal, marking manager Dave Challinor’s first signing of the close season as they prepare for life in League One. Mingi, 23, joins the League Two champions from Colchester United for an undisclosed fee.
Pompey stands to benefit financially from Mingi’s transfer, as they included a sell-on clause in his deal with Colchester. Despite a hamstring injury sidelining him for a significant period, Mingi impressed during his time at Colchester, making 28 appearances across all competitions. Under the management of Danny Cowley, Mingi’s versatility and intelligence were evident as he adapted to various positions, including central midfield and defensive roles.
Challinor believes Mingi’s attributes make him a valuable addition to Stockport, citing his physicality, aggression, and quickness as qualities that will aid his transition to League One. Mingi, who previously made 29 appearances for Pompey during his two seasons with the club, is set to join Stockport pending EFL approval once the transfer window opens.
Stockport’s Director of Football, Simon Wilson, expressed confidence in Mingi’s potential to contribute to the team, highlighting his athleticism and versatility across multiple positions. Meanwhile, Pompey is yet to announce any signings as they await the official opening of the transfer window on June 14 before confirming any business.
