According to reports, the club is open to offers of £15 million to recoup their investment in the midfielder they acquired from Sky Blues late last summer. United will be braced for interest in some of its great players after sliding out of the top division, with one or two big transactions expected to cover the revenue shortfall.

Rival teams are also reportedly interested in Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza, who are unlikely to see a season in the Championship as part of their career advancement. Hamer was one of the greatest performers in the Championship before being given his Premier League debut by the Blades after Sander Berge was moved to Burnley.

With five goals and seven assists, he has been one of the club’s most creative powers in what has otherwise been a disappointing season.

Speaking about Hamer’s future, manager Chris Wilder admitted in Friday’s pre-match press conference: “There are some players who may not want to be a part of that journey as well, so we understand that and have to be smart and make sure we get value for money on those players who are leaving.” We want to keep certain players, including Gus. And Jayden [Bogle] is one among those, as is Arblaster.

“We are in a vulnerable situation because of the Premier League’s finances, so I can’t sit here and guarantee they will be here for the next five years. I just don’t think it happens, and neither do the majority of Premier League clubs, let alone a team that has had a bad season and will be relegated to the Championship the next season.

“But there are certain players we have a plan for and want to surround ourselves with because we believe they will help us move forward. And someone we don’t see leading us forward. It’s not a personal decision; it’s simply how things are and how we’re attempting to build the club to make a speedy turnaround.

There will be rumours as a result, which is understandable, but Gus has been a success; he brings excitement to the team and ability at the top of the pitch, and I know how much the fans think of him; he’s a crowd favourite, as are Jayden and Arblaster, because of their positive, consistent performances all season.”
