Following Wednesday night’s draw against Coventry City, Morgan Whittaker sent a message to Plymouth Argyle supporters.
In the first moments of the second half, the forward gave the Pilgrims the lead with his 17th league goal of the year (all stats via Fbref).
After Ellis Simms pulled one back in the 65th minute, Mickel Miller gave the home team the lead again in the next few minutes.
But in the end, Liam Kitching’s goal in the 96th minute gave the Sky Blues a point in the closing seconds of the match, making the score 2-2.
This kept Ian Foster’s team from winning three straight games and climbing out of the relegation zone with ten points.
Whittaker delivers a message to Plymouth fans
In his reaction to the outcome, Whittaker thanked fans on social media for supporting the team in a midweek match.
Although he felt Plymouth should have won the game with all three points, Kitching’s late goal meant the teams ended up splitting the points.
Whittaker posted on Instagram, saying, “A real tough one tonight, personally I think we deserved all 3 points but we will bounce back.”
The significance of Whittaker to Plymouth
Whittaker leads the Championship in scoring thus far this year, with 17 points, a tie with Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn Rovers.
After moving to Home Park last summer, the forward has been playing rather well for Plymouth.
Before going back to his parent club Swansea City, he spent six months on loan with the team last year, during which he scored nine goals and provided seven assists in the first part of the League One season.
The 23-year-old has played a significant role in the Pilgrims’ ability to stay in the second division for more than one season.
Though no deal materialized, Serie A club Lazio was linked to a January move for the forward due to his performances, which have also drawn attention from other clubs.
Position in the Plymouth Argyle league
Eight points clear of the relegation zone at 15th place in the Championship table right now is Plymouth.
Foster’s team is 11 points behind sixth-place Coventry, which puts the Pilgrims in a comfortable mid-table position.
Considering that this is the club’s first season back at this level of English football in more than ten years, they should be able to close the season in that kind of position.
Since assuming leadership of the squad in January and succeeding the departing Steven Schumacher, Foster has garnered praise for his team management.
Plymouth’s next match is scheduled for February 17 at home against Leeds United.

It is hardly surprising that teams are paying attention, and the fact that Lazio is a Champions League contender shows how far he may yet go in his career.
Plymouth may find it difficult to maintain the advance into the January market, but they did well to cling onto it.
Having been one of the league’s most impressive attackers this season, he has a strong chance of being the league’s top scorer at the end of the campaign.
