Coventry City’s heartbreaking FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester United on Sunday was watched by football fans around the world.

Coventry City participates in Wembley Classic.

Given the disparity in resources and squad quality, many expected the Red Devils to cruise to victory.

And that appeared to be the case when Bruno Fernandes put Erik ten Hag’s side three up just before the hour mark.

Ben Sheaf Penalty Miss Coventry

However, the Sky Blues refused to give up and battled back thanks to goals from Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare, with a Haji Wright penalty forcing an extra 30 minutes.

Coventry’s best FA Cup comeback was thwarted when Victor Torp’s goal was disallowed due to an offside VAR call on Wright in the final minute of extra-time. They eventually lost on penalties.

Ben Sheaf and Milan van Ewijk of Coventry City could attract interest this summer.

Even though it was a terrible way to lose, the club came out of the game with a lot of credit, with many observers surprised by the talent in their ranks.

While this is a positive, it also puts individuals on the radar of other clubs, including Callum O’Hare, whose future is uncertain.

The attacking midfielder’s contract expires in the summer, so clubs will be keeping an eye on him, and his impressive performance against Premier League opponents will have piqued their interest.

Callum O'Hare Coventry City

Losing O’Hare would be a blow for Coventry, as he has been a key player for the club over the years, and he continues to play an important role for Mark Robins’ side.

But, speaking to FLW, fan pundit Neil Littlewood explained that it was some of O’Hare’s teammates that he was more worried about losing given how they handled the big stage at Wembley.

I don’t think Callum will have done himself any harm on Sunday, he had a good game, even if the penalty was weak, but it’s one of them,” Neil told Football League World.

I’m more concerned about Ben Sheaf and Milan van Ewijk, as I thought those two played out their skin and would’ve definitely impressed any potential suitors out there.”

The likes of Fulham, Everton and Cov’s Championship rivals Southampton have been keeping tabs on O’Hare in recent months, according to a report from The Sun, and whilst he had a solid showing against United which could open himself to more interest, it may be some of his other team-mates that are on the radar too come the summer.

Coventry City’s summer plans can’t just revolve around Callum O’Hare

Obviously, the situation with O’Hare is out of the clubs hands, as he is in a position where he can decide his next move, and it would be no surprise if he did move on, as Coventry’s likely failure to make the play-offs means they won’t be able to offer Premier League football.

Championship Table (As it stands April 22nd)
Team P GD Pts
1 Leicester City 43 42 91
2 Leeds United 44 43 90
3 Ipswich Town 43 32 89
4 Southampton 43 29 84
5 West Brom 44 23 72
6 Norwich City 44 16 72
7 Hull City 43 8 66
8 Coventry City 42 14 63

It would be a shame if his time with the club ended with the player leaving on a free, but he does have the talent to play at a higher level, so it’s understandable if he does depart.

But, as Neil outlines, there is a lot of quality at Coventry, and the team performance on Sunday was proof that they are a side heading in the right direction, and that there are several outstanding individuals in the XI.

Sheaf and Van Ewijk deserve special mentions, but you could also include Simms, Wright and a few others, as they all played well against a side that are likely to be in Europe next season.

Crucially, Coventry now have some off-field stability, so they won’t be under any pressure to sell this summer, and whilst interest in the players is inevitable, there will be a belief that they can continue to grow and it will be about adding to the squad instead of losing the star men.
