  •  Coventry City fans are thankful that Storey’s takeover bid fell through, believing they are better off under King’s ownership.

William Storey has claimed he would have ‘transformed’ Coventry City had he completed his deal to buy the club before they were eventually sold to Doug King.

William Storey’s failed Coventry City bid

Sports fans may be familiar with the 45-year-old British businessman because of his past involvement in Formula One and his long-standing desire to invest in football.

In the interim, Storey was looking to buy Coventry. In recent years, he has been in talks to buy Reading and Sunderland.

WILLIAM STOREY

Under previous owners SISU, the Sky Blues had gone through a very trying time as they dropped down the leagues and, astonishingly, were forced to play separate seasons in Northampton and Birmingham, outside of their home city.

Fans were thus eager for an upper management change, and Storey was considered a viable option after reaching an agreement to join the Midlands team.

As it happened, Storey became enraged with King for concluding a deal for Coventry, accusing SISU of violating his exclusivity window by exploring other options.

In the FA Cup semi-final, Ally McCoist said he was devastated that Coventry City was unable to complete their comeback against Manchester United.

William Storey sends Coventry City message

Even though the club have made serious progress since King took over, Storey is adamant that he would have the Sky Blues in a better position right now.

That’s after he took to social media to hit out at King, as he explained how he would’ve been a better option for the club from both a football and commercial sense.

(Mark) Robins continues to do a great job for poor owners. Had Sisu honoured my signed deal, Coventry City would now be transformed. New top players, investment (in contrast with King who has taken £7m OUT of the club after selling 2 best players) new sponsors & training ground.”

Coventry City is moving in the correct way.

Coventry’s past few years have been turbulent; in less than a year, they have lost two penalty shootouts at Wembley, the first in the play-off final against Luton Town and the second, in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United last Sunday.

Although their chances of finishing in the top six were virtually eliminated by a midweek loss to Hull City, the supporters will still acknowledge King’s outstanding contribution to the team.

Championship Table (As it stands April 26th)
Team P GD Pts
5 West Brom 44 23 72
6 Norwich City 44 16 72
7 Hull City 44 9 69
8 Coventry City 43 13 63

The fact that they have progressed all the way to the FA Cup final and the Premier League indicates how far they have come in the last roughly eighteen months. They will all remember how hopeless things were before he took over.

Therefore, if King continues with Robins, it will be widely assumed that the team and club will succeed.

Storey’s failure to complete deals with three football clubs has damaged his reputation, and many Coventry supporters are unlikely to believe his bold claim that he would have done more

They will ultimately be happy with their current situation and relieved that Storey chose not to move forward with his takeover offer.
