Larry Lloyd, a former star of Coventry City, passed away at the age of 75. After winning the premier league and European titles with Liverpool under Bill Shankly, the rugged center-half joined the Sky Blues in 1975. In his three seasons at Highfield Road, he played 54 games and scored six goals.

On social media, the team expressed their condolences for Lloyd, posting: “We are saddened to learn of the death of former Sky Blues defender Larry Lloyd.”

Lloyd’s skills cost Coventry a club record £240,000 in transfer fees. The £200,000 sale of Mick McGuire and Jimmy Holmes to Tottenham was supposed to finance the purchase, but Bill Nicholson’s resignation as Spurs manager caused it to collapse. Coventry was thus left without compensation.

After an initial loan term, Lloyd was acquired by Brian Clough for £60,000 in October 1976, on Peter Taylor’s advice. Forest’s goal was to be promoted to the English football premier league, and they succeeded. The next season, they defeated Lloyd’s old team, Liverpool, in the League Cup final and took home the League championship.

Lloyd and Forest won the League Cup and the European Cup in 1979.

He was the driving force behind Brian Clough’s historic squad and one of the Reds’ Miracle Men. The former defender was crucial to Forest’s historic back-to-back 1979 and 1980 European Cup victories.
