In a thrilling EFL Sky Bet Championship match between Coventry City and Rotherham United at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Coventry City’s forward Ellis Simms showcased his prowess by scoring a hat-trick, leading his team to a resounding 5-0 victory.
Simms opened the scoring just four minutes into the game when Viktor Johansson, the Rotherham United goalkeeper, made a rare mistake, dropping a routine cross from Jake Bidwell into Simms’ path, allowing him to nod the ball into the net.
The Swedish goalkeeper’s error proved to be just the start of Rotherham’s troubles as Coventry City continued to dominate. Defender Joel Latibeaudiere extended Coventry’s lead to 2-0 with a header from Bidwell’s corner in the 23rd minute.
Simms then demonstrated his versatility by scoring two more goals in quick succession. In the 27th minute, he capitalized on Haji Wright’s assist to slot in a left-footed shot, making it 3-0 for Coventry. Just ten minutes later, Simms completed his hat-trick with a superb strike from the edge of the box, showcasing his ability with both feet.
With Coventry firmly in control of the match by halftime, they added to their lead in the second half. Although Rotherham managed to stem the tide of goals, Coventry’s Matty Godden had a header blocked on the line.
However, Coventry wasn’t finished yet. In the dying moments of the game, Fabio Tavares added a fifth goal, sealing a comprehensive victory for Coventry City.
The win was crucial for Coventry as it kept them in contention for a playoff spot, while Rotherham United found themselves languishing at the bottom of the table, 19 points adrift of safety.
