Antony’s celebration following Manchester United’s victory over Coventry in the FA Cup semi-final has sparked controversy and criticism. Despite United securing the win on penalties after surrendering a 3-0 lead, Antony’s gesture towards Coventry players, particularly after Rasmus Hojlund’s winning penalty, drew widespread condemnation.
The Brazilian winger celebrated by cupping both ears towards the Sky Blues players, which ignited anger on social media, with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook labeling it a ‘disgrace.’ Antony has since spoken out, attributing his actions to provocation from the Coventry players.
He wrote: “Coventry proved why they reacted the semi-final. We seeked this spot in the final for our fans and we achieved.
“The way our fans were treated by their players was not nice and I, in the heat of the moment, I’ve reacted to the provocations in a natural defence of my club!”
