“Unbelievable”: Former Celtic player and Zinedine Zidane’s all-time favorite

Over the years, Celtic supporters have had the pleasure of seeing some true, authentic players of the highest caliber wear the green and white Hoops.

I highlighted players like Jimmy Johnstone, Paul McStay, and Henrik Larsson as a few instances of the caliber that has graced Parkhead’s field in a post I wrote earlier this week.

You do, however, sit up and take attention when you learn that one of the greatest players of all time once worshipped a guy who really played for Celtic in the contemporary era.

For that’s just what Peter Martin just accomplished. In recounting an incident involving a player that Celtic recruited in 1998 whom he had to meet, the journalist-turned-pundit said that Zinedine Zidane was a huge admirer of his.

Zidane adored Lubomir Moravcik, a former Celtic idol.

While narrating a tale, Martin said how he had to interview Lubo soon after the Slovakian midfielder joined Celtic and how he got in touch with a French media outlet to get film of some of the player’s goals.

“I got to interview him [Lubo Moravcik], and obviously I was working for STV had to get footage of him,” Martin remarked to PLZ Soccer.

“Lubomir Moravcik, played over there; could you send me some goals?” I remarked to Canal+ over the phone. then he said, “How many?”

And I asked myself, ‘What?’ and he said, “It’s unbelievable how many there are.” You name it: left foot, right foot, etc.

“And he mentioned that he is his favorite French football player in an interview with Zinedine Zidane.”

It’s understandable why Zidane adores him. The Celtic fans adored Moravcik, who was an incredible genius.

In his rookie season of 2001, he assisted Martin O’Neill in winning a treble, Celtic’s first since the Jock Stein era. His skill with the ball at his feet captivated the Hoops fan base.

It’s amazing to consider that a player with such great skill and reputation didn’t win any games until he was in his thirties.

But Moravcik left us with memories we will all never forget, therefore Celtic’s great gain was made up for the other team’s loss.
