Turkish club could complicate Premier League Rangers transfer pursuit – the Athletic

Rangers could face competition from Turkish side Trabzonspor in the hunt for Nottingham Forest centre-back Scott McKenna.

The Gers have been strongly linked with the Scotland international defender, 27, after he fell out of favour at the City Ground this season.

Making just five Premier League appearances this campaign and having not played for the club since September, McKenna is expected to move on from Forest in the January window.

With Old Firm rivals Celtic also reportedly pulling out of the race, Rangers fans might’ve been forgiven for thinking that they’re the only side linked to the former Aberdeen defender.

But as it transpires the Athletic claimed a few days ago that Turkish Super Lig club Trabzonspor are also in the hunt for Scott McKenna’s signature.

Trabzonspor linked to Scott McKenna

In an update regarding Nottingham Forest’s transfer window plans, the report claims Scott McKenna is expected to leave the club in this transfer window.

Naming Old Firm rivals Celtic and Trabzonspor as the leading suitors for the player, there is no mention at all of Rangers in the player’s transfer stakes.

Make of that what you will – with Alex Crook of TalkSPORT the first to link Rangers in recent days – but there are few other names doing the rounds regarding the centre-back.

The links means that as things stand, Rangers look to be battling Trabzonspor for the signing of Scott McKenna as Philippe Clement looks to improve his squad this January.

Do Rangers need centre-back reinforcements?

Rangers have had injury issues in defence this season with the underwhelming Ben Davies currently out injured and John Souttar consistently having fitness issues at the club.

Connor Goldson remains a club stalwart and Philippe Clement appears to prefer Leon Balogun – who is 36 in the summer – to the other options in the squad.

With Scott McKenna out of contract in the summer, the signing could bolster the Ibrox club’s defensive options whilst also adding an extra homegrown player to appease UEFA’s rules.

Speaking ahead of Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup clash with Blackpool, new manager Nuno Espírito Santo also admitted that the club want to ”reduce” the number of players in the squad.

However the coach says that there is “no final decisions” taken on the players at the City Ground.

Scott McKenna isn’t the only player on Nottingham Forest’s books being linked to Rangers in this transfer window either.

The Ibrox club are also said to be in discussions over the defender‘s Nigerian teammate Emmanuel Dennis.
