Player angry after Celtic summer exit

Defender Carl Starfeldt has acknowledged that he had hoped that his transfer to Celta Vigo would go more smoothly than it has.

The defender acknowledged to Fotboll Direkt that he had changed his mind after departing from Brendan Rodgers’ team in the summer.

Starfeldt moved to Celtic Park from Rubin Kazan in July 2021, ending a two-year tenure with Celtic in the summer.

He made the decision to travel to Spain and join Rafa Benitez at Celta Vigo, a €5 million move that guaranteed Celtic would receive their money back.

He was going to be joining a team that had placed 13th in La Liga the previous year, three points clear of the relegation zone, and Valladolid, who dropped to 18th place with forty points.

Although it was hoped that Benitez’s appointment would bring about more stability, after 29 games, they are currently in 17th place, five points ahead of Cadiz in 18th place.
Benitez has already lost his job, and the defender acknowledges that when he left Celtic, he had different expectations.

“It has felt great for me, but coming here with no expectations has helped a lot. Of course, we play with very good players every week in Spain, which is a great way to grow,” he remarked.

“While I am content with my personal season, I had hoped that the team’s performance would improve.

“We’ll exert every effort to maintain our league standing. In football, nine games remain, yet the lead is still only five points; things can change quickly. However, we have such a great team that I really don’t think we should be down there at all. So hopefully we stay and have a better season next year.
