Peter Grant says Celtic made a huge mistake by failing to sign Serie A midfielder destined for Juventus

Due to injuries to key players, Brendan Rodgers has had to cope with serious midfield challenges for Celtic this season.

After dealing with Reo Hatate’s absence for a significant portion of the season, the Celtic manager must now deal with the loss of his captain, Callum McGregor, following this week’s injury update.

Rodgers has struggled with midfield troubles for the most of the season, which has been compounded by the departure of Aaron Mooy at the beginning of the campaign and the subsequent decline in Matt O’Riley’s play.

But as we approach the pivotal title run-in, things are starting to look up, with Hatate getting closer to full fitness and O’Riley looking sharp once more.

However, would our midfield issues have been resolved had Celtic signed a significant player a few short seasons prior?Peter Grant seemed to believe that.

Speaking about Lewis Ferguson, the former Celtic great bemoaned the fact that the Parkhead club passed up the chance to recruit him before he moved to Bologna.

“To captain them [Bologna] as well and to speak Italian, all these things, he’s been a credit to himself and his family to go and do that and grab it with both hands,” said Grant on The Go Radio Football Show. He’s been outstanding.

However, we felt he should have been picked by Celtic or Rangers. And we already expressed how excellent he has performed a very long time ago.”We stated at that point in time that he was playing for Aberdeen in the incorrect position the season before.”

At Celtic, Lewis Ferguson?

Ferguson is unquestionably a gifted player. When he moved to the Serie A, might he have actually succeeded at Celtic?

Celtic had Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Aaron Mooy, David Turnbull, and Matt O’Riley vying for a spot in the first team at the time of the move in 2022.

It might therefore be argued that, although though Ferguson would have been a good addition at the time, it was highly improbable that he would have made it into the first team, much less the starting eleven, had he moved to Celtic Park.

Even while his talent is undeniable at this point, nobody could have predicted how quickly he would become well-known in Italy.

Now heavily tipped to join Juventus, Ferguson looks set to net Aberdeen a pretty penny should the Old Lady make their move in the summer.
