Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has spoken out about the difficult part of his job at the club. The Irishman has acknowledged that being a manager is not all roses in the garden and that behind the scenes, there are tough decisions to make.
Rodgers spoke out after his side’s 3-0 victory over St. Mirren on Tuesday, admitting that conversations with players about their lack of a future at a club can be arduous to hold. This comes amid the opening of the January transfer window, in which several faces are expected to depart Celtic.
With those players, Rodgers has likely already had the awkward chats he dreads: “It’s the hardship of the job”, he said (Daily Mail). “It’s one of the tough moments that you have. But I always think you’re better being clear with the player and where he stands.”
It’s a challenge because you know that sometimes a player will leave here and he won’t have similar conditions again at his next club. But you have to do it for the greater good of the team, the club and for the player himself.”
“It’s a side of the job that is a challenge, especially when players are so honest and they are on the way up. But the reality is, as a manager, that’s what you get paid to do.”
At times, it is hard to remember that those working within the football industry are human like everyone else. Things are no different with Rodgers, yet he has to have talks and make decisions few would want to.
It is easy for supporters to simply call for certain players to depart their club but some fail to remember the fact that each player is a human being and for this to happen, several unwanted chats need to be had. Departures can only come to fruition once a set of circumstances come together on both a humane and professional level.
With the number of expected exits from Parkhead this month, it seems as though numerous conversations will have to be had throughout January. Although the manager is no fan of them, it is an essential part of his job and one that can make way for fresh quality to be added to his squad.
