Manager opens door for 21-year-old to join Rangers as he’s now fourth-choice

PSV Eindhoven coach Peter Bosz has opened the door for Rangers to bring Fredrik Oppegard to Ibrox with the Norway under 21 international currently the fourth-choice left-back at the Eredivisie leaders.

Earlier this week, Dutch reporter Rik Elfrink insisted that PSV’s main focus – during the January transfer window – is to keep their table-topping squad together. Offers for the likes of Joey Veerman, Johan Bakayoko and Hirving Lozano will be directed immediately towards the nearest waste paper basket.

But if there is one player who may be allowed to leave, it’s Fredrik Oppegard, the Rangers linked left-back.

Rangers keen on PSV’s Fredrik Oppegard

With all due respect to the former Go Ahead Eagles loanee, he’s unlikely to be missed. Oppegard has not played a single minute of Eredivisie football so far this season, after all, following surgery in the summer.

He’s not even part of Bosz’s matchday squad these days, Oppegard limited to reserve team football for the ‘Jong PSV’ side in the Dutch second tier.

And, when asked about Oppegard’s future by De Telegraph, Bosz indicated that he would not stand in the defender’s way should Rangers step up their interest.

“I don’t have to (let him go),” says the former Borussia Dortmund, Ajax and Lyon manager. “But he is the fourth player now in his position.”

Ridvan Yilmaz could go

Oppegard, despite his lack of game time in the Netherlands, could still be an excellent addition to the Rangers roster. A fine ball-carrier, Oppegard loves to pick up the ball in deep positions and embark on those trademark marauding runs into the final third. Presuming Ridvan Yilmaz goes and Borna Barisic stays, he would give Philippe Clement a different, more athletic option at left-back.

Rangers are also keen on MLS ace Kai Wagner. Liverpool, however, have rebuffed an enquiry for Owen Beck, while Josh Doig is closing in on a £4.3 million move to Torino.

Reports linking Steven Alzate and Emmanuel Dennis with a mid-season switch to Glasgow have also been played down.
