It has been clear over the past week that the Falcons and Vikings will decide Kirk Cousins’ free agency. He’s at the top of Atlanta’s want list to replace their quarterback, according to almost every NFL insider, but Minnesota doesn’t appear willing to let him depart. Kirk Cousins will make a decision for the Vikings tonight over whether or not to test free agency, according to reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. It appears that the outcome will depend on who is willing to spend the most money.
The Vikings are expecting to hear from Kirk Cousins tonight on his decision to explore free agency, sources tell me and @alec_lewis Of note: His contract does not void until Wednesday so the team will have until then to extend him before his dead cap hit officially hits the books… pic.twitter.com/A4QJlQKJqg

The Vikings have given Cousins two fully guaranteed contracts, but they don’t seem willing to offer him another one just yet. Should that be the case, the Falcons will have an opportunity to completely destroy him later in the week.
The Vikings and Falcons are in a “50-50 proposition,” as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler put it. I still believe that when the chips are down, Kirk Cousins will get the contract he wants from Minnesota, matching pretty much anything Terry Fontenot will offer, but we won’t know for sure until it happens.
It appears that the Falcons will turn to Baker Mayfield and potentially even Justin Fields if they are unable to sign Cousins. Fields might not be their first choice, but if Cousins and Mayfield decide to stay with their current teams, Terry Fontenot might not have an alternative.
