“Didn’t think”: Callum McGregor, the Celtics captain, tells Neil Lennon about his injuries

Callum McGregor’s injury pretty much sums up Celtic’s season thus far.

Due to injuries sustained by elite players such as Reo Hatate, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kyogo Furuhashi, Greg Taylor, and Alistair Johnston, Brendan Rodgers has had to cope with terrible injury problems this season.

Apart from Carter-Vickers, though, the absence of Callum McGregor is arguably the worst news Rodgers and the Celtics supporters have had to deal with thus far this season.

After what Aaron Rodgers stated this past weekend regarding his injuries, it doesn’t appear that the captain of the Hornets will miss many games.

And what the Celtic skipper revealed to Neil Lennon regarding his ailment seems to support that. The crucial midfielder was speaking with the former Celtic boss, and this will encourage the Hoops fan base.

According to Lennon [page 3 of the print edition of The Herald], Callum McGregor was a big miss. On Sunday, he was enormous.

Celtic didn’t appreciate his impact when he was present. He is taken for granted by others. He is very skilled, knowledgeable, and game-aware.

“Celtic against Hearts lacked all of that. He must return right away. They have a couple of games coming up where, based on their performance thus far, you would assume they should be fine. After that, they have the international break, so you’re hoping he’ll be ready.

“He said he didn’t anticipate he would be out for too long when we spoke after Sunday’s game. Celtic needs him back immediately.

“He’s a top player and every Celtic team would want a Callum McGregor in it, especially at this stage of the season.”

So it seems McGregor will be out until after the international break where, hopefully, he will be back for the games against Livingston this weekend and St Johnstone the following Saturday.

That means the Hoops captain is likely to return for the Tony Macaroni Arena clash against David Martindale’s men on the 31st of March but, most importantly, the Glasgow Derby on the 7th of April.
