Livingston then had a cracking chance from Michael Nottingham but Hart saved brilliantly with his feet. Kuhn was still wreaking havoc but he hobbled off with injury on a day Cameron Carter Vickers also was absent with a troublesome hamstring strain.

Celtic were seeking hero and they didn’t have to look far as Maeda was on hand to turn home Tomoki Iwata’s perfect cross. The holders held on and secured a dramatic win in a game where they created enough chances to win five times over with multiple chances missed after going ahead but Kyogo got in on the action after another offside check. All roads now lead to Hampden for a team who have won this tournament in five of the past seven seasons.

Daiz in disguise

Never has a player letting their hair go from a skinhead to a number two fade appeared such a difference maker. Maeda looks different in appearance and, perhaps, is a new player with Idah leading the line. This is no dig at Kyogo, however, there appears more opportunities and space for Maeda to find when his compatriot isn’t on the pitch. His double was greatly received but it also appeared an indicator of more to come. There was less build-up and more demands on Maeda darting in behind. It worked a treat and appears a route to further success in the final weeks of the season. His hat-trick was richly deserved.

Liv and let try

The Lions roared from first minute to last and were a good watch minus the comical defending which undid their bravery in the final third. Organisation was a byword of the Martindale era but it’s been posted missing amid a season which sees Livi marooned to the foot of the Premiership table. Messrs Yenghi and Nouble caused Scales and Welsh fits from the opening whistle and they never slowed during an engrossing contest. Martindale will believe the great escape might still be on.

You Kuhn do it

The 24-year-old arrived with plenty of hype but bar his equaliser at Aberdeen it’s been a slow burn. His dental issues were severe but he now appears up to speed and was brilliant as he ripped the Lions to shreds. His chip in the second half to tee up Bernardo was outrageous and the culmination of a stirring display. The former Rapid Vienna star looked quick, dangerous and skilful and worth every penny of the £3m paid for his services. His late injury woe will be a worry with Yang still absent for the visit of St Johnstone next week.
