Neil Lennon discusses how he was turned down for an Ireland job

According to Neil Lennon, he came “very, very close” to being appointed manager of the Republic of Ireland’s national team.

The 52-year-old is well-known for his accomplishments as a manager at Celtic, where he played for 293 games.

Lennon enjoyed great success during his stints at Celtic

Lennon won five Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups, and the Scottish League Cup during his two tenure in the Celtic Park dugout.

He was fired from his position at Omonia, a Cypriot soccer team, in October 2022 after just seven months in command.

under an interview with talkSPORT Breakfast, Lennon stated that he was eager to get back into management and, shockingly, disclosed that he was on the verge of accepting the Ireland position; John O’Shea is now under temporary leadership.

He acknowledged that, despite being a Northern Irishman and having 40 caps for his nation, “I was really close to the Ireland job.”

It's been nearly a year-and-a-half since he was last working in management

It had been almost a year and a half since his last managerial job.

“I have no doubt that I would be interested in this position. One of the best clubs in Scotland, it’s a large, traditional club.”

Lennon admitted that he misses the lifestyle and the benefits that come with being a successful football manager despite the pressures involved.

Mick McCarthy makes jokes about how, after the infamous 1990 World Cup incident, he thankfully traded shirts with Gary Lineker rather than shorts.

“When you’ve managed Celtic for six years, it’s just full on, it’s a privilege and a great experience,” he stated.

“After that, it’s like leaving the army and realizing that this is your regular life again.”

“You’re used to a very regimented life but it’s also very enjoyable and very rewarding, so yeah I do miss it.”
