New Documentary Explores The Smiths’ Rise and Controversial Breakup.

A new documentary set to be released later this year aims to take fans on an in-depth journey through the meteoric rise and sudden breakup of The Smiths, one of the most influential bands of the 1980s. Titled There Is a Light That Never Goes Out: The Story of The Smiths, the film will feature rare archival footage, never-before-seen interviews, and a deep dive into the creative and personal tensions that led to the band’s untimely demise.

The Smiths, formed in Manchester in 1982, consisted of frontman Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. Known for their poetic lyrics, melancholic melodies, and a unique blend of jangle pop and post-punk, the band quickly gained a cult following. Hits like This Charming Man, How Soon Is Now?, and There Is a Light That Never Goes Out solidified their place as icons of alternative rock. However, despite their success, internal conflicts and creative differences eventually tore them apart.

The documentary will delve into the strained relationship between Morrissey and Marr, whose songwriting partnership defined The Smiths’ sound but also became the source of growing friction. Marr’s frustration with the band’s management, coupled with Morrissey’s reluctance to evolve musically, led to the guitarist’s departure in 1987. This ultimately signaled the band’s dissolution, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mark Gill, known for the Morrissey biopic England Is Mine, the documentary promises to offer fresh insights from those closest to the band. Former band members, industry insiders, and music critics will provide commentary on The Smiths’ influence and their turbulent final days.

With fans still debating the possibility of a reunion, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out will offer an intimate look at the brilliance and dysfunction that defined one of the greatest bands of all time.
