A footballing rival (cough) has scolded Celtic for refusing to play in the European football league’s Atlantic League. Andrew Doyle, the gregarious vice-chairman of Shelbourne FC, launched the attacks, stating that Celtic are normally happy to be the best team in Scotland and runners-up in European play.
Of course, there have long been rumors that Celtic will leave Scottish football and join the English Premier League or some other makeshift European league made up of teams of a similar caliber that play in non-competitive domestic football and are therefore starved of greater income. It has never materialized and, in any event, doesn’t appear that it ever will.
The gap that exists between the top five leagues and the others is widening at an accelerated pace every year, and this is evident in the UEFA Champions League group stages almost annually. For this reason, the format was changed from group stages to a league model. Teams like Celtic won’t gain much from this, though, as the main purpose is to delay the ongoing campaign for a European Super League and keep the titans of European football pleased for longer.
Doyle disclosed that the situation is currently somewhat that way, with teams from smaller nations simply not being able to regularly compete with Manchester City, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich. According to the Shelbourne CEO, a creative concept like a cross-border league featuring teams from other nations competing would be the only way to close the gap.
“Yes it could, of course, but Celtic would have to want to be competitive in Europe and my guess is they’re perfectly happy being at the top of a depreciating SPFL forever and then being perpetually uncompetitive in the Champions League,” he said in response to a question about Celtic’s potential involvement in those plans.
They’re riding the gravy train. They stand to gain even more from the new UEFA Champions League format, as more European games translate into more European cash. Celtic are not expected to pursue it as long as the current system is in place and Scotland’s ranking on the UEFA access list is still relatively high. “I believe they will be content to consistently win the Premiership, where they will automatically advance to the round of 32 and then lose there, but they will still receive all that European money,” he told the Scottish Daily Mail.
Naturally, this guarantees that Scottish football will always be utterly uncompetitive, as no one can match Celtic’s financial might. Due to the fact that our arrangement benefited all parties involved—not just Celtic and (the) Rangers in Scotland’s case—it would have satisfied every reasonable UEFA requirement. Whether or if there is a super league is not the topic of discussion.
“The question is whether UEFA or another organization runs an improved Super League that is more competitive and advantageous to all. UEFA already has its own super league, the Champions League. Certain nations’ champions, like Ireland, have never participated in the damn competition. It follows that the system is flawed. utterly damaged.
