“I dare say”: A former scout offers intriguing perspective on Celtic’s player acquisition process.

Former scout gives fascinating insight into player recruitment at Celtic

John McGlynn, a former Celtic scout, has provided an intriguing look at Brendan Rodgers’ hiring practices during the Irishman’s initial tenure with the team.Hired in 2015, during the Ronny Deila era, McGlynn was promoted from the recruitment team into an Opposition Analyst post shortly after Rodgers started his first season with the squad.

Prior to that change, though, McGlynn was employed by Chief Scout John Park, who helped find players for outgoing manager Ronny Deila. What McGlynn says here will refute the myth that most players signed with Celtic were forced to do so by the manager.

McGlynn said, “I got an interview and I got the job,” [Open Goal]. We were scouting, so we were dispersed around the area.

We all know that things can change, but even so, it is comforting to know that there is at least a semblance of a recruitment team looking to identify players, and that the manager does get involved in making a decision on them. Let’s hope that the team can identify better players for the upcoming summer transfer window because if the quality of players does not start to improve we could see ourselves falling behind our rivals for available spots. Celtic’s recruitment has come under some serious scrutiny over this past season, and many fans maintain the belief that the vast majority of players that are signed by the club do so without the manager’s knowledge.
