As my captain, Steven Davis made me proud, recalls former NI manager Ian Baraclough.

Ian Baraclough, the former manager of Northern Ireland, expressed his pride in having Steven Davis as his captain.

In September 2022, Davis’ final international match coincided with Baraclough’s last game as manager—a 3-1 loss to Greece on the road.

On a night when he handed the captain’s armband to longtime teammate Jonny Evans, who was playing for his 100th international cap, Davis earned his 140th and final cap.

The former Rangers midfielder received an MBE in 2017 for his contributions to football and has captained Northern Ireland 82 times.

After being out of commission for more than a year due to a knee injury, he declared his retirement on Thursday.

The 39-year-old, who now holds the record for most caps for the UK men’s national team, may take on a coaching role again for Northern Ireland.

The Irish FA fired Baraclough soon after the 2022 loss to Greece.

After the former Sligo Rovers manager took over for Michael O’Neill 28 months prior, Northern Ireland had only won four of their 22 competitive games.

After O’Neill left to join Stoke in the Championship, the former Under-21 manager was elevated to the senior position.

Baraclough remarked, “Davo has had a truly wonderful career and achieved so much in that time.”

“He has distinguished himself for his side, whether it is in club football or on the international scene. He set a great example for others to follow as a leader.

“I was proud to have worked with him and have him as my captain. I don’t know anyone who has a bad word to say about him.”

Warren Feeney, a former international teammate of Davis, also honored the former Fulham, Southampton, and Aston Villa player.

“As the most-capped player in the United Kingdom, he epitomizes the spirit of Northern Ireland,” stated Glentoran boss Feeney.

“He comes from a wonderful family and is a very humble and talented player. My reaction upon hearing it was one of joy. I want the best for him in the future since he has given his all for his country.

Without a doubt, he will remain in the game as a fantastic character.

“We need people who are like him. To be honest, I was a little saddened by the news when I texted him to ask to catch up.

“He is among the greatest players to have represented Northern Ireland.” Despite his incredible record, he is not a show-off; rather, he respects everyone and is deserving of all the accolades bestowed upon him.

“I loved the away trips, but I’ll never forget the goal he set up for David (Healy) against England.”

“We had a good group; at the time, I believe we were ranked 27th in the world. We had a terrific team spirit, and he played a big part in it.

“Steven deserves the opportunity to succeed as a coach; he is a highly respected individual.”
