Brendan Rodgers shares delight as Cameron Carter-Vickers signs new long-term Celtic contract

Celtic have been quiet in the transfer window so far; however, Brendan Rodgers looks to be keen to retain his key assets this month.

Denmark international Matt O’Riley is now set to stay at Parkhead after the Hoops turned down a bid from Atletico Madrid for his signature.

The La Liga giants put forward a loan offer with an obligation to buy the 23-year-old at the end of the campaign; however, Rodgers has since revealed that the former MK Dons man will be sticking around in Glasgow’s east end.

He stated on O’Riley’s future [Celtic FC Official website]: “Matt’s a player we don’t want to lose and he won’t be going anywhere in January. I think he’s been absolutely brilliant and it’s a great testament to him and what the club can do for a player.”

Reports earlier this month also claimed that Cameron Carter-Vickers has been courted by Premier League trio West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

An unnamed club from Qatar have also made advances to try and acquire the United States international in January; nevertheless, their efforts haven’t come to fruition and he won’t be heading to the Gulf region.

Celtic have announced today that Carter-Vickers has put pen to paper on a new five-and-a-half-year deal at the club, which will keep him at Parkhead until 2029.

Speaking to official Celtic channels, Rodgers has signalled his delight at being able to tie down such an important player for the long term, stating: “This is great news for us all that Cameron has extended his contract with the club.

“He has been an absolute rock for us since he joined the club and has played to such a high standard so regularly, week in, week out.

He later added: “There has been a lot of talk about the interest in him from elsewhere, but all he has done is get on with his football, decide where he wants to be and we are delighted that he sees his future at Celtic.”
