After a’stunning’ £9 million bid for Argentine winger, Coventry City loses to Portuguese powerhouses.

The winger, who is under contract with Estudiantes de La Plata in the Argentine Primera Division, was identified by City’s recruitment department, according to Sun transfer specialist Alan Nixon. However, this weekend, Benfica, a Lisbon-based team, beat them to get the player on loan with a compulsory purchase option.

The article states that “Coventry bid £6.5 million up front and an extra £2.5 million on promotion but Benfica came up with more guaranteed cash.”

Last month, Sunderland and Newcastle United were also rumored to be interested in the midfielder. Although Rollheiser can play on the left or as a number 10 offensive midfielder, he is mostly a right winger and is left-footed.

“I had no doubts whatsoever about visiting Benfica from the time I learned about the possibilities of doing so. It’s among the biggest clubs worldwide and the largest in Portugal. I didn’t second-guess the opportunity when I heard about it, and I’m glad to be here now,” Rollheiser told Benfica TV.

At the age of 14, Rollheiser began his career at River Plate before relocating to Estudiantes. He has played in 83 games and scored 13 goals since 2022, which has helped the team win the Argentinian Cup in December 2023.
