Journalist: Rangers are pursuing a new striker who is prepared to play.

Journalist Dean Jones is not surprised that Rangers are enquiring about Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt this month.

Jones believes the Elland Road attacker, who has 49 appearances for the Whites, is ready to perform in the right environment.

The 21-year-old has made eight appearances in all competitions this season under Daniel Farke, scoring on one occasion.

“I guess it’d be a loan move,” Jones told GIVEMESPORT. “Gelhardt would be a nice profile player because he seems ready to perform on the right platform.

“He’s got excellent traits that probably need a bit of development now. I’m not surprised that enquiries are being made on both fronts from Rangers or Celtic at this moment in time.

“For a player like Gelhardt, it’s probably confidence-boosting to have those conversations happening around you right now. Whether they can come to fruition and turn into a transfer is different, but I don’t think it’s harming anybody to look at that situation.”

Exit likely

Given Gelhardt’s lack of playing time this season under Farke, a January transfer window exit from Elland Road seems likely.

The young striker has been limited to just six Championship games and two EFL games, scoring in the latter competition.

The lack of minutes has been somewhat unsurprising, with summer signing Joel Piroe doing a fine job in the final third since moving to Elland Road.

Patrick Bamford meanwhile has returned to fitness and is now back among the goals, leaving Gelhardt well down the pecking order.

It remains to be seen where the striker will be playing his football next month, but Rangers could certainly do with a new player in that position.

Manager Philippe Clement will, however, need to be careful, with not all of Michael Beale’s forward signings hitting the ground running at Ibrox.

A loan switch would certainly suit Gelhardt, allowing him regular game time to find his feet and find his scoring touch once more.
