‘Got to go’: Frank McAvennie pleads with Celtic to sell these three players in January

'Got to go'... Frank McAvennie pleads with Celtic to sell these three players in January

Frank McAvennie isn’t one to mince his words when he has something strong to say about Celtic. And the club’s former striker has been forthright about who Brendan Rodgers needs to get rid of from his first-team squad between now and the end of the January transfer window.

Celtic have already seen Nat Phillips, Kwon, Yosuke Ideguchi and Adam Montgomery leave Parkhead this month but only Ideguchi was a permanent sale.

McAvennie is adamant the Hoops need to cut ties with many more players, as much as 10 according to the 64-year-old pundit.

And when speaking to Football Insider, while he didn’t name exactly who all of these players should be, he did mention three – those being James McCarthy, Mikey Johnston and David Turnbull.

McAvennie said: “There’s a lot of players they need to get rid of. For me, there are about 10 players that have to go this window.

“James McCarthy – he’s on a five-year contract on big money and he’s not playing so just put him out on loan and away from the club.

“He’s never going to get near the first team. He’s getting really good money and his agent has done a really good job for him, but you want to see him go and play football.

Mikey Johnston, for me, has got to go. There are better players coming through who should get a chance – you can’t keep giving Mickey chances.

“He’s been there for years now, but enough is enough. He’s never stamped his authority or got first-team spot. But for me, there are plenty who need to go.

“I would let Turnbull go because there’s loads of players in midfield coming through. I think they’re better options than Turnbull. He’s done alright, he’s a good player.”
