£3m+ twist emerges today as left-back Rangers want to sign ready to take his time – report

Torino are prepared to throw a spanner in the works as Rangers line up a move to sign Hellas Verona left-back Josh Doig this month, according to the Daily Record.

The Scottish news outlet shared (8 January) that the Serie A outfit are pushing hard to complete a £3.5m move for the left-back in January and would be prepared to offer a lucrative sell-on fee plus Lithuanian youngster Gvidas Gineitis.

Daily Record reported on its website on Monday (1 January) that the Gers are eyeing the former Hibernian man as a potential solution to solve their left-back problems and have made an approach to sign.

However, it is believed Doig wants to take his time over a decision on his next destination with the left-back still having two years to run on his current contract. His priority will be to make Steve Carke’s Scotland Euro 2024 squad this summer and any upcoming decision will be made with that opportunity in mind.

Fits the bill

It’s been widely documented that Philippe Clement isn’t too happy with his options at left-back and that he is looking to strengthen in that area of the pitch in January.

It doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, either, as Borna Barisic’s deal is due to run out at the end of the campaign and Ridvan Yilmaz has largely failed to impress and could well be on the move this month.

Rangers should ideally be looking at young homegrown talents to boost their squad this month and Doig certainly fits the bill however, the Gers do face an unwanted battle to sign him with Torino planning to hijack their move for the left-back.

However, Doig is believed to want to take time over a decision on his next destination meaning there is still a chance Rangers can sway his decision to join Ibrox rather than stay in Italy this month.

The Scotsman has 53 SPFL appearances under his belt following his time in Edinburgh, while he’s also played 32 times in Serie A since signing for Verona in 2022.

£5.5million was the reported figure back on 1 January now Torino are trying to seal a £3.5m deal which can only be good news for Rangers. They can win this race with ease.
