Kyogo Celtic shoulder operation mooted as Rodgers explains recurring injury

Brendan Rodgers admits the winter break has come at a good time for Kyogo.

The Celtic striker was questioned earlier this season after going an uncharacteristic seven games on the spin without a goal with just one in 12 in that barren run. He has since hit the goal trail again with strikes against Livingston and then Rangers and Rodgers has been pleased to see him slowly getting back to his usual self.

The manager was even criticised by some pundits and sections of the support for being to blame for changing the players’ instructions but that was brushed aside. But now the Northern Irishman believes he’s getting back to his best.

The break will definitely help him,” Rodgers said. “He needs a bit of recovery time then we can get some work in before the games start again. He’s returning to what I’d expect from him with his runs, his movement and his opportunities.”

Kyogo has history with a shoulder injury and Rodgers explained how that still bothers him now.

The 28-year-old would require an operation to fix it which would result in a four-month layoff. It’s not imperative at this moment, though, albeit Rodgers did reveal the Japanese striker may wish to do something about it in the future.

His shoulder’s still the same. He could get it fixed but he’d be out for four months,” he added.

“From time to time his shoulder pops out. Then he pops it back in again. It may be something he decides to do in three or four years’ time.
