Ferguson thrilled by new Rangers arrival as Spanish training camp verdict shared

We’re delighted to welcome former Ibrox star Derek Ferguson as our exclusive Rangers columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points in Govan

Derek Ferguson is excited by the prospect of Fabio Silva being a Rangers regular after he officially arrived on loan from Wolves on 1 January.

Silva, 21, made his debut as a late substitute in the 3-1 win over Kilmarnock a day later but now faces a lengthy wait until he’s able to make his second competitive appearance for the Gers due to the winter break.

However, Ferguson believes that’s a good thing as it will allow the Portugal Under-21 international, who spent the first half of the season struggling to make a mark at Wolves, to get to know his new Ibrox teammates at the club’s January training camp in Spain.

We got a wee glimpse of him against Kilmarnock when he came on for the last 20 minutes. What caught my eye is that he looks like a really good athlete and he listens to the manager as well,” Ferguson told.

He said he’s not going to pigeonhole him as a centre-forward, he can play in a wide area and I think he can play in numerous positions.

Do I see him as a centre-forward? Absolutely. Can he play out wide? Yep. I can even see him playing as a number 10.

He’s got the technique and he looks like a clever player.

I think he’s a good addition and it is going to be crucial for Silva.

He’ll get to know the players at the training camp in La Manga and he can get comfortable and feel good about himself. That’s important. You must always allow players who move to a new club two or three months to settle in. He’ll be with his new teammates for the next two weeks and hopefully, he’ll settle in.

It was clever of the manager to give him those minutes against Kilmarnock to feel what it’s like to be Rangers player and soak in the atmosphere.

I think he’ll be a very good player.”

Silva played 10 times in all competitions for Wolves in the first half of the campaign, scoring one goal which came against Blackpool in the Carabao Cup in August.

He started three times in the Premier League but hadn’t been used by Gary O’Neil since a late substitute appearance in a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield United on 4 November.
